The Chemstress Mechanical Engineering Department offers services to a variety of industries such as Power, Chemical, Bulk Material Handling, Food & Beverage, Gas and Petroleum, and General Manufacturing. Services include design concepts, equipment evaluations, layouts, estimating, pipe stress calculations, construction support and audits.
Services
Design Concepts & Layouts
Chemstress Mechanical Engineers work closely with the client and related disciplines to determine the equipment and layout(s) necessary to achieve the required goal(s) for various processes. The conceptual design phase serves as the basis for preliminary layouts, equipment and installationates. Several different iterations of layouts are usually tried at this early point in the project to assess the best possible solution that will meet the program requirements, and to determine cost differences between designs. Chemstress has the ability to develop process layouts in either a 2D or 3D format using the AutoCAD®* or the higher valuePDMS® **3-D format which can be converted into an AutoCAD format at project completion.
Equipment Evaluations
The basis of all equipment to be used for a project stems from the development of a written specification listing all process, mechanical design, electrical and control requirements. Each equipment specification is approved by discipline and by the client prior to submitting to suppliers for quotes. A bid tabulation is performed to verify that each supplier is compliant with the specification(s) and to compare bids. Supplier shop drawings are then reviewed for compliance with specification requirements and interpretation into the project.
Estimating
Chemstress uses a proprietary database program to list each component material and labor installation cost by discipline and by area that define the project. Labor installation hours are estimated by using national standard cost data sources (R.S. Means®***, cost data and others). Also, Chemstress’ estimate database allows us to use costs from similar projects that we have estimated in the past. Accuracy of cost estimates is based on the level of design completed on a project, and Chemstress has estimating experience on a full range of multi-discipline projects including “grass roots” and plant modifications.
Pipe/Vessel/Tank Systems
The Chemstress has the expertise to fully analyze applications where above ground piping flexibility is deemed to be required.
Chemstress’ experience covers all types of applications encountered in the various industries in which we are active. Chemstress provides associated pipe support design and details, specifies expansion joints and interfaces with vendors on equipment connected to the piping systems for allowable load requirements.
Chemstress has the know-how to ensure that the piping part of your project is code compliant. Chemstress has the capability to code review new pressure vessels and tanks and critique fabricator drawings. For existing vessels and tanks that have incomplete documentation, Chemstress can assist you in developing a design basis and completion documentation. Particular circumstances can require a more in depth analysis of items like flow dynamics, heat transfer and stress analysis.
Construction Support
The Mechanical Engineer represents the client in project meetings, evaluates design change requests, construction inspections, and develops a list of remaining contract items to complete.
Audits
The Mechanical Engineer prepares a detailed assessment of equipment according to contract specifications, installation and performance, or a damaged condition report via direct shop or jobsite inspection, as required.
